9 Great Unsolved Mysteries of History

The world is full of mysteries. Even with the great advancements we’ve made in technology, there are still some left unsolved. Our need to uncover the truth leads us to discover more about the world and inspire us to believe in the impossible. What is your opinion on these unsolved mysteries?

Stonehenge

StonehengeThe origins of this prehistoric stone formation in Wiltshire, England are unknown. The stones date back to sometime around 2000 and 3000 B.C. The blocks weigh several tons each, creating the question how and why would people move these large stones? It has been estimated that it took 1,500 years to build. The stones used to create the inner ring are from 200 miles away in Wales – that’s a long haul. There is no written record to indicate why the formation was created or how, so that is left open for interpretation.

Aluminum Wedge of Aiud

In 1974, workers in Aiud, Romania found a 4-pound wedge shape piece of aluminum 35 feet down in a sand trench next to prehistoric elephant bones dating back at least 11,000 years. Shockingly enough, metallic aluminum was invented in 1825 making it incredible and puzzling to find the material buried with bones much, much older than that.

Jack the Ripper

Jack is known as one of the most infamous serial killers mainly because he was never caught. Even after 120 years no one knows who he was and how he got away with it. His identity remains one of the greatest crime mysteries of all time.

 The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Roanoke Island was established in 1587 by John White and his English settlers. White returned to England to get his family and more supplies, but when he returned in 1590, the entire colony was empty with only the word “Croatoan” carved on a post. There has been no solid explanation for the settlers’ disappearance.

Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda TriangleMany airplanes and ships have gone missing within the infamous triangle on the Atlantic Ocean between the points of Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. Pilots report their instruments stop working as they pass through the area and numerous ships have been lost without a trace at sea. Unexplained disappearances have been occurring since 1950.

Zodiac Letters

Another famous serial killer made our list but for a different reason. The still unidentified killer sent coded letters to the police and press as a means to taunt them. To this day only one of the four letters/cryptograms sent were able to be cracked.

Big Foot

Good ole Sasquatch is supposedly living in the snowy mountain areas of the United States and Canada. This creature is believed to live in seclusion and has been seen walking on two feet. Countless photos and videos have been taking claiming they found Big Foot, but no direct contact has ever been made.

The Wow Signal

Jerry Ehman was working on the SETI Project in the Ohio Wesleyan University’s Perkins Observatory when he picked up a 72 second radio frequency from deep within space coming from the constellation Sagittarius. No one has been able to pick up the signal again and the origin of the signal cannot be explained.

The SS Ourang Medan

In 1947 an SOS message was sent out that said the captain of the SS Ourang Medan along with the entire crew were dead. When the Silver Star was able to receive and respond to the distress call they found that to be true. Everyone on board was dead, including the person who sent out the distress signal. There is still no conclusion as to what happened on that boat.
